I'm interested in growing hazelnuts. Anybody out there familiar with this "tree"? Also, any favorite compost suppliers? I'm just getting mine going and need some for new plantings.

Hey everybody.

I am looking for a place to live in or around ashland beginning in November, a place that has some space to garden. Ideally I am looking for aa situation where I can do some work in exchange for most of the rent, and pay something like $200 a month as well. I have been WWOOFing, during work exchange on over 15 farms in California and Oregon this year, and have worked on farms for the past 3 years, so i am an experienced laborer. i am also a great cook, babysitter, house cleaner, and musician(guitar).

I am a student of Permaculture and I have dedicated this year to making a peraculture garden in the Ashaland area(to be near a great social, cultural, and local food scene.) I have plenty of references from previous employees whom i have worked with and lived with, including Ashlander Chuck Burr of the Ashland Restoration Farm on the Old sisskiyou highway.

Please, if this doesn't suit you, perhaps you know somebody who might be interested. if you could let anybody that you know who might be interested, i would greatly appreciate it. I really want to grow food and share it with people, especially my hosts.

Thanks,

Daniel Kra

Things have slowed down lately around here water-wise, which is a good thing considering the shortage. Plants aren't needing as much extra watering as during the long heat wave - probably this is mostly seasonal, since the big growth is finished, the roots are doing their job, and the plants are now busy producing flowers and fruits. And how! I'll bet I'm not the only gardener who annually revisits Marge Piercy's poem "Attack of the Squash People" right about now. (If you don't know this poem, you can find it on several gardeners' websites by doing a search.)

I was surprised to see my earlier post about our Mountain Meadows community garden appear in the Tidings (with photos) - I was new to this site and hadn't realized that might happen. Gosh, I was just introducing myself. My neighbors were delighted at the "publicity" about our community.

This group seems like such a great idea but not much is happening on it - are people reading but not posting? Or maybe it's taking people out there a while to catch on to the possibilities this offers for the community. I'm sure at some point it will take off. In fact, maybe winter will turn out to be the growth season for the Ashland Gardeners group - when we're in the habit of dreaming about spring. At this point in the year, probably everybody is still out there weeding and maybe even rather tired of the whole idea of gardening. Gardeners have their seasons, too.

Just some random thoughts. Also, I'd like to add a few more garden photos to my album but am still trying to figure out how to do that. Sweet peas hit by hail storm. Sunflowers face down mountains. All kinds of things happening :-)

This is the time of year it's crucial to keep your veggies from wilting in this intense sun by giving a good deep watering each morning before the sun hits the leaves.

Hi Frederic. Yes, I put the album on Connect Ashland. You should be able to find it if you go to the Main page of this site and scroll down to the Photos; as of now, it's still featured there - it's the one with the scarecrow. If you click on that you should be able to view the album. I think you can view it on my page as well, in the photos. No, we don't sell produce - it's just for us gardeners and our neighbors. When we have excess, some of the coop members give it to the food bank, I think (I'm not involved in that part of it).

I'll have to check out the photo album. I take it the album is here on this connectashland site? Is your resident run co-op something like a farmer's market where you also sell your produce?

Greetings Ashland gardeners. I just added a photo album of our community garden here at Mountain Meadows. (That's Mountain Meadows, not Mt.View!) I have a tiny patio garden, so most of my gardening is in the community garden. We're a resident-run co-op. We have a NWF wildlife habitat certificate; use natural practices; run by consensus. We have about 80 members, 79 raised boxes, and patches for squashes, tomatoes, berries and several other things, plus community-shared cutting and herb gardens run by co-op member volunteers. Almost all the photos are from this morning. I'm still learning my way around this site, but I think you'll see if it you go to the main page. Hope you enjoy the show! :-)

PS I don't know about garlic plants, but we've been trying the garlic-castor oil soil soak to discourage rodents and it seems to work. So do those solar-powered noise makers, but you have to switch them every now and them because the critters get used to the sound of the individual ones.
