Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary describes a locavore as one that eats food grown locally. This encompasses those who grow their own food to farms that grow and sell locally.
Tell me.....besides what I grow and store myself, what is safe to eat or consume or wear anymore. With the GMO's mixing with nature, bacteria resistence increasing in prevelence, Monsanto taking over food production and seed companies, what is truly safe anymore?
Where did that cotton or wool in that shirt you are wearing truly come from? The cotton in your tampons you are putting in your body? The T.P. you wipe with. We can only trust that which we produce with a conscious mind and respect for nature, that which hasn't left a huge footprint getting from the ground to your mouth.
I beg you to grow your own ... food & other products as much as is possible. Buy clothing and things you use in your bodies from trusted local sources. Get involved with a CSA, support local farmers markets, buy locally & that will have an effect globally!

As I stated below, I'm finding it extremely challenging to eat only local foods while sustaining life with food stamps. I have a small raised bed with a few greens in it and no room to store foods so I'm forced to shop at the Co-op and ShopNkart. With the growers market closing for the winter, it limits me even more. what to do?
Dave
I'm wondering how I can be a locavore in the winter time with no local farmers market. I live on Foodstamps so I'm forced to shop at superdupermarkets. I plan to put a cold frame over my raised bed but it isn't enough sq. feet to produce much. Any ideas folks?

Sometimes not having a car sucks. I wanted to go to the growers market in Ashland today but it was further than I feel up to riding and I haven't any busfare. Hard to be a Locavore if you can't get to the local growers market!! I'm living closer to downtown Talent so it's a trek! Sure wish I could find a regular ride that likes to go early.
