As moderator of Ashland Locavores I'd like to introduce you to different Southern Oregon farmers that produce awesome food here in our area and sell it locally as well.
My 1st farm to mention is out in the Applegate. Mary and Vince Alionis and family do a very fine job of not only growing fine organic food but also in treating the land with respect through crop rotation as well as creating a balance and harmony with the insects that can wreak havoc on crops. I had the pleasure of volunteering at their farm a year ago and was impressed with the whole setup. I also loved the country store they have that's open 24/7 and is self serve and uses the honor system for payment. They have several fridges full of freshly harvested veggies, fruit, and whatever is in season at the time. The prices are even better than what we pay at the Growers Market and it's fresher! It's a lovely drive on Hwy 238 and the farm is about 1.5 miles past the Provolt Store on the left. You can also see them at the various Growers Markets from Ashland to Grants Pass. My favorite part of helping out at the farm was when Vince came out early one morning with a freshly lifted cantalope and handed me a slice of that delicious nectar of the gods. There's nothing like it!! Thanks Vince!
