For the Tidings
On June 5 Project Homeless Connect will unite more than 40 organizations representing service providers, government, agencies, and businesses as well as community volunteers who will converge on the Medford Armory to kick off the Jackson County 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness with a one-day, one stop event designed to serve impoverished individuals and families.
The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. It will be hosted by the Jackson County Community Services Consortium and Homeless Task Force, and is sponsored by Access inc., the Jackson County Bar Association, and the United Way of Jackson County.
Project Homeless Connect began in San Francisco in 2004, and “has been successfully duplicated in many other cities around the country,” said Ed Angeletti, the Planning Director for Access Inc.
Mor than 200 cities coast to coast have since held Project Homeless events.
The goal of the event is to connect the community to the issue of homelessness and lessen the sting of poverty to those in need by providing them with support services and housing referrals. Some of the services provided will include medical and dental screenings, hygiene products, haircuts, mental health screenings, and assistance in applying for benefits such as food stamps and social security.
Those interested in volunteering should contact David Dismuke at 512-3918 or by e-mail at ddismuke@lcdv.org.
