End of Term Movie Catch Up

So finals are over and Spring Break has set in. This term has been a lot of fun, watching movies every week and reviewing them, but there were a lot of movies that I caught and just didn't have the time to review fully, or chose a different movie for that week. So I thought I might do a few short reviews for those films, just to wrap up the term. It's Complicated:I saw this just before the term started, so it's been a while. Starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin, this movie is a…See More

Alice in Wonderland : Movie Review

Walking into this movie with certain expectations is not difficult. In fact, the difficult part is not expecting something, anything, good or bad. Why? Because Tim Burton is that director that is so well known for a very specific style that, like it or hate it, comes with such expectations. For example, I expected it to be weird. Tim Burton excels in the strange, from Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Big Fish. No matter what the movie is about,…See More

Brooklyn's Finest : Movie Review

First off, I’m pretty sure the title here is sarcastic.Brooklyn’s Finest is the story of three different cops in Brooklyn, whose stories only intersect in fleeting moments, each one carrying their own story arch. First we have Eddie (Richard Gere), a half drunken policeofficer a week away from retirement. He is a wash out, receives no respect fromhis peers, mostly because he has done nothing in his career to earn it, and hasno real personal life to speak of. He is just going through the motions…See More

Nine : Movie Review

Musicals are always a tough sell. I’m not sure why. They’re usually popular, most of the time there’s the built in audience of the Broadway show or stage version, but that doesn’t guarantee a movie will be wellreceived. It doesn’t mean the movie will be good. Sometimes adapting a showfrom stage to screen, movie or not, is difficult and the results aren’t great.Adapting a Broadway show that is itself based on another movie just furthercomplicates things. There’s always something to compare it…See More

Johnny Johnson : Performance

Last night the SOU Department of Performing Arts put on a musical through the combined efforts of the Music and Theatre Arts. The musical, Johnny Johnson: The Biography of a Common Man, was written by Paul Green, with music by Kurt Weill. It was directed at SOU by Randall Stuart, with Jennifer Schloming as musical director, who was also the conductor and played the keyboards in the performance. The play was about a young, idealistic man, Johnny Johnson, living in the United States just before…See More

Cop Out : Movie Review

Buddy cop movies are their own kind of classic. Fun, action packed, engaging, they’re known to be comedic (but aren’t always), pitting two mismatched people together to solve a crime or save someone. Or something. The plot is usually simple: bad guy needs stopping. It’s down to our boys (who might not even be boys, but most of the time they are) to work for the police (though sometimes one of them isn’t even a cop). It’s an easy, open formula, and has been quite…
