Ashland's Holy Grail

Last weekend I felt like a discovered a secret stash of chocolate hidden downtown, or a wondrous dinosaur in the park behind my house. Something amazing enough that I know I’m not the only one who’s seen it, but it still gave me a thrill of discovery. It’s not usually a feeling I have after a night of drinking. Usually the feelings I have at one thirty in the morning run more along the lines of nauseated, confused or sleepy. This particular Thursday night instead of a midnight walk of shame I…See More

No More Back-to-School!

I had a moment of excitement, mixed with regret, when I saw the back-to-school aisle in all its glory getting put up at Bi-Mart this summer. At first I was simply excited that for the first time in a long time I don’t have to do any back-to-school shopping this year. As a sign of being a true adult I can buy shoes whenever my credit card allows me to, rather than just in the fall, and my never ending hunt for the perfect pen can be put on pause for a while. I don’t have to think about whether I…See More

Small Town Bar Hopping

I love going out at night in Ashland. I love it more than going out in a bigger city, more than in another country, more than going out in Medford, where my friends always beg me to go. I don’t have a regular Monday thru Friday kind of job, so I end up going out many different nights of the week. I like them all. It’s not that I love to drink, or eat pizza after midnight, or dance, what I love is constantly running into the same people. Some people, like the friends who want to go out in…See More

Save Water! Support Nudity!

I am thrilled that the City of Ashland is requiring people to cut back their water consumption. I’ve never been big on volunteering, the quality of my work usually falls under the mediocre category, and (mostly) I’m lazy - so conserving water is finally my big opportunity to show the city how much I care! This is something I can do, something I can excel at, a brand new hobby to pursue.First I’m going to stop washing dishes. Some people turn off the water between soaping and rinsing, but I’m…See More

"Maybe you should just suggest cheese, to go with your name. Like string cheese to suggest the child-like joy of summer time. I'll drink a pina colada this weekend. I'll put it on your tab."

"Here's an idea for consideration. For one month, dedicate all your energies and efforts to contributing to improving the lives of 5 people (not yourself) you know personally. Speak only words of encouragement to yourself and others. Ignore the…"

A Midlife Crisis 25 Years in the Making

Someone recently forwarded me an article entitled “Too Young for a Midlife Crisis.” I don’t know if the article was forwarded to me in the spirit of being a joke, the way my friends sometimes forward me personal ads off of CraigsList, or as a hint, the way FaceBook always encourages me to “meet single dads in your area.” Is this friend suggesting that my life is currently similar to a midlife crisis, or simply letting me know that the option is available to me?Really, it’s never too early for a…See More

Single Ashlander

I’ll admit that I often fall prey to a common trap of dating – lowering my standards. As time goes on I continue lowering my standards until my last date happened, an attractive man with the personality of a fourteen year old girl. My sister met him and had to tell me, “he’s a ditz, a male ditz.” I took a quick look at the fact that he did not appreciate my pirate jokes, shouted comments like “let’s get rowdy” and lived in his father’s basement, and quickly decided I had hit rock bottom.I start…See More

"Quite a confession, BA. I know this suggestion may be asking a lot, but try to imagine life without a child for a moment. You are no longer the parental guide tasked with instilling wisdom and life guidance to a tiny human who hasn't yet…"

My Mexican Souvenir

After my last blog was featured in the Daily Tidings I read that someone's advice to me was to go somewhere different than Ashland. I have, in fact, spent time in a place very different from Ashland. After high school I moved to Mexico City and lived there for almost two years. After two years of long work weeks and midnight tacos I moved back to Oregon with just two souvenirs to show for my time spent south of the border, a pair of leather boots (please don't throw blood at me) and a son. Of…See More
