Last weekend I felt like a discovered a secret stash of chocolate hidden downtown, or a wondrous dinosaur in the park behind my house. Something amazing enough that I know I’m not the only one who’s seen it, but it still gave me a thrill of discovery. It’s not usually a feeling I have after a night of drinking. I had a moment of excitement, mixed with regret, when I saw the back-to-school aisle in all its glory getting put up at Bi-Mart this summer. At first I was simply excited that for the first time in a long time I don’t have to do any back-to-school shopping this year. As a sign of being a true adult I can buy shoes whenever my credit card allows me to, rather than just in the fall, and my never ending hunt for the perfect pen can be put on pause for a while. I love going out at night in Ashland. I love it more than going out in a bigger city, more than in another country, more than going out in Medford, where my friends always beg me to go. I don’t have a regular Monday thru Friday kind of job, so I end up going out many different nights of the week. I like them all. It’s not that I love to drink, or eat pizza after midnight, or dance, what I love is constantly running into the same people.

I am thrilled that the City of Ashland is requiring people to cut back their water consumption. I’ve never been big on volunteering, the quality of my work usually falls under the mediocre category, and (mostly) I’m lazy - so conserving water is finally my big opportunity to show the city how much I care! This is something I can do, something I can excel at, a brand new hobby to pursue.

Someone recently forwarded me an article entitled “Too Young for a Midlife Crisis.” I don’t know if the article was forwarded to me in the spirit of being a joke, the way my friends sometimes forward me personal ads off of CraigsList, or as a hint, the way FaceBook always encourages me to “meet single dads in your area.” Is this friend suggesting that my life is currently similar to a midlife crisis, or simply letting me know that the option is available to me?
