On Friday, January 29, the Hannon Library was graced with another performance by the on campus A Cappella group Dulcet as they prepare for their upcoming competition. The ICCA competition, as stated in the last blog about these performances, is on February 6 at 8pm at the Hult Center in Eugene. It is the quarterfinals for the West section of the national competition, featuring schools from Oregon, Washington, California and Utah.

They were a little late to this performance, as last time, but Dale Vidmar, who once again set up some chairs and had the fire turned on so people could enjoy the show, at least had some advanced warning. He let the audience know and they were fine, the small gathering turning to chatter amongst themselves until the large group of singers came down the stairs and deposited their backpacks and things behind the Circulation Desk in the main lobby of the library.

They performed three songs, explaining that these were the ones they would be performing in the competition. The first was She’s So High, originally sung by Tal Bachman (not Everclear or Fastball, as the internet would have you believe). It is a cute, upbeat song, and well suited to the harmonies of voices. An added treat that separated this performance from those in the past was the inclusion of limited choreography, including a moment where the men all got down on their knees as they sang about her being ‘high above’ them. By the end of the song they had lifted one of their female singers offer the floor.

It, to borrow a word from the song itself, was lovely.

The second song was Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror, which shamefully took me a moment or two to recognize. It was admirably performed and the choreography, though not as obvious as the last song, was still there. The third song, which I had not heard before save through seeing Dulcet’s performances, was called Wine Red by a group called The Hush Sound.

Even from one week to the next it seems like they are making leaps and bounds in their progress. With the addition of choreography, and having it performance ready, they are well on their way toward a competition level engagement. Hopefully when the 6th rolls around they’ll have no where else to go, at the top of their game, which doesn’t seem unlikely. Whatever the outcome of the competition itself, they are doing our school proud already.

Dulcet is currently raising funds to record a full album of their A Cappella songs. They were offering a small recording, of four or five songs on the CD, for five dollars but I, at least, had no cash on me and couldn’t purchase it. Still, I would have happily donated to their efforts.
